The Winged Watchman
Through it all, the mother of the family finds ways to keep things going. She washes clothing and dishes without soap, mends clothing without thread, creates new clothes out of old ones, takes in a small infant and two little girls when there is not even enough food for her own family, feeds beggars from the cities who come to the country looking for food, etc. She even finds ways of making the last Christmas of the occupation festive by unraveling her own muffler and knitting mittens for her boys and using scraps to create thumb-sized dolls for the little girls under her care; the children were all blessed when they awoke to find these treasures in their shoes on St. Nicholas' Day.
There is a quote at the end of the book that is quite touching:
Do you know who suffered most during the war? The mothers. Do you know who worked the hardest? The mothers. And do you know who will get the least praise? Again, the mothers. You haven't any idea, and you never will have, what it cost your mother to keep going, never daunted, never giving up, taking each new blow in her stride and keeping you all happy under the worst possible conditions.
We, especially as women in Christ, should consider the times. Many of us are now experiencing reduced incomes due to the printing of money ("monetary easing" or counterfeiting) that has been going on by the Federal Reserve. Millions of families are experiencing unemployment due to the recessed economy. Our country and way of life is under siege and it is uncertain what will ultimately become of us. What we should realize is—we are in His hands! While things in the world may look bleak, we must find ways to keep the darkness outside! Whether we live in a huge house or a car, we are responsible to keep our environs filled with the warmth, hope, and love of the Lord, and we must do this physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
First of all, we must stay engaged and in constant communion with the Lord. There is no way that the tremendous amounts of creativity and vitality we need in these times can come from ourselves! We must be students of His Word. Amazingly, even when I read the historical books (which I dearly love!), God reveals things to me about the condition of my own heart, the corrections I need to make, the direction I need to take.

Migrant mother & children in 1936 Dust Bowl
The other day I was staring at the clothes in my closet. There is a change in the season and my wardrobe for last season looks pretty shabby! The children are all well taken care of, with recent thrift-store shopping and deals we found for the boys by shopping for clearance items on the Internet. I am not a "clothes-horse", in fact, it is hard for me to break down and buy for myself (may I say that I hate shopping for clothing?), but it is very necessary for me to look decent so that I can encourage my family—my appearance and the way I carry myself affects the atmosphere of my home (a wife and mother is the spirit of her home).
So I said to the Lord, "What are we going to do about this?" and then left it with Him, not thinking about it again.
The next day, my dear, generous husband was expecting to spend $50 for a necessary repair, but the fee was waived. In his excitement, he asked if there was anything I needed. My mind went blank—I honestly couldn't think of a thing! He then took me to a thrift store, anyway, and it was only then that I remembered I needed some spring clothes!
I am happy to report that I have four decent, near brand-new shirts and a cute skirt hanging in my closet! God is so good (and there is still money left over for other necessities)!

Jesus receives the children
A godly atmosphere during these days is so necessary. Learning how to arrange special times with what we already have on hand. Creating happy memories just by our own attitude. Speaking the Word of God over situations brings peace and dispels the darkness. This must become our work, our "ministry".
This is how women since the beginning of time have gained favor in God's sight—women who, in this life, may not receive any recognition, but are looking to a crown incorruptible—in the life which is to come!

What a wonderfully encouraging post. The world tries repeatedly to make mothers think our role is unimportant, when just the opposite is true.
ReplyDeleteI can remember reading some bio information about Audrey Hepburn. She was among those who suffered during the war in Holland. She attributed her very thin figure to metabolic problems that occurred during times of near starvation during the war years.
I'm glad you got some new items for your wardrobe. That's such a boost for a woman!
Blessings from......Denise
This is excellent! Your advice and godly encouragement are inspirational.
ReplyDeleteSo often we mothers get weary from all the work and sacrifice we endure. But remembering our eternal reward and the blessing from God will help us keep going.
That books sounds great. I'll have to see if I can get a copy.

I love your blog! I'm always encouraged by everything you write, although I don't often comment. Wonderful that you got some lovely new clothes! :-)
ReplyDeleteI put "The Winged Watchman" in my library cart!
I got blessed similarly at a thrift store for my birthday. I, too, previously looked a bit shabby. I just love thrift stores! They have so much that is new looking and well made.
ReplyDeleteYour writing blesses me tremendously. My husband is currently underemployed--has been for two years. I am learning all the things you write about here. I feel less alone after reading many of your posts. Thank you! Bless you and yours!
I'll get that read aloud! Sounds wonderful!
We love 'The Winged Watchman'! Thanks for an encouraging post. (I found your blog post thanks to Mrs. White tweeting it.)
ReplyDeleteVery good and encouraging post, Sherry. Thank you. We have the most important job in the world!
ReplyDeleteDeanna
What an encouraging post! My husband came home this evening and told me that we must drastically reduce our spending. I was praying about this and then came to read your blog! He is so good.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I love this!! Kari
ReplyDeleteThank you for this post. Your past few posts have made me weep, as I see my own shortcomings in faith and the truly amazing and mighty God that I serve. I have been worried over provision as my husband and I struggle to pay our bills each month and try to get ourselves out of debt caused by my husband's former unemployment and medical fees from our miscarriage last summer. We started a jar of what we call Joshua rocks a few years ago. On each rock we write the amazing provision from God we have received or answers to prayer we have seen. These are so we might remember and tell them to our children. I realized that my fears grew as I neglected this act. We have taken it up again, and I am speechless at the generosity of our Lord. He pours out love and blessings on us so beautifully and just in time. Thank you for bringing me back to the truth and encouraging me when I truly needed it.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this post. I shared it with my mommies group as well. You are a blessing to all mothers. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteGreat Post!! Just what I needed to hear today..Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI have read a number of stories of the war and yes it was the mothers and daughters and grandmothers that kept the families going. These women had the most amazing spirit to fight on, no matter what was happening around them. That quote was just beautiful and I think I will write it down and keep it as it was so lovely.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear about your shopping - it always feels good to put something on that is new in the wardrobe.
Blessings
Wonderful post!!! This was exactly what I needed at this moment today. I love reading your blog. There are so many 'pearls of wisdom' in your posts.
ReplyDeleteI love all of Hilda Van Stockum's books! She had seven children (I believe) and some of her books have a picture of her surrounded by her children.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is the strength of a nation's women which makes the difference! May the Lord strengthen us to enable us to stand in the hard times...and He will! We don't have to be fearful just turn to Him.
Jill Farris
Thank you for inspiring us mothers, as always. And *love* thrift stores!
ReplyDeleteHi Sherry,
ReplyDeleteI am trying to be a Godly mother to a very large family. We home school, have no outside help, etc. However, my second oldest is a prodigal child. She ran away at age 18 three years ago because she didn't like our rules. I made many mistakes with her which I have repented of.
it is very hard to read blogs such as yours. I used to be challenged, but now I want to give up. I am ashamed to be around other Christian women who have raised only godly children. Our other children show great promise and faith in God, but I am tired and discouraged. I have lost my dear daughter and don't know how to go on.
Thank you for your wise words to others. I know they are helping to encourage women to be the wives and mothers God wants them to be.
Dear Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteI understand your feelings, I have been there, too!
Don't let the enemy discourage you. No matter how hard we may work, our children are their own moral agents, and will stand before God on their own, without their parents! Continued prayer avails much!
The Lord has shown us that if we try to raise our children with the fear of God while they are young, once they become 18 we must release them to the Lord's correction and care. We have done our job and now is the time to allow Jesus to finish the work in them.
You keep on with what you know is right to do, and don't be ashamed or afraid to be around other Christian women--they just might have similar stories to share! Everyone makes mistakes.
Transparency can be a blessing to others, it is not proper to share everything with everyone we must use discernment!
Be encouraged, Dear Sister--He knows what it is like to have lots, and lots of prodigals--and He was the perfect parent! While we are responsible totally for what goes on when they are at home, the choices they make as an adult are not our responsibility. Remember to keep her in your prayers--we will too!
Blessings,
Sherry
I just found your blog through a link from another. We are currently reading "The Winged Watchman" for school. My kids and I have all loved it.
ReplyDeleteWe are in the Republic of Congo, and things can feel primitive. It has helped me put things in perspective when I start to feel sorry for myself. I take a lot of things for granted!
Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;-Colossians 4:2 KJV and James 5:16-Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much(KJV). Today I prayed as we drove past our firstborn's and his family's road-on the way home after church. I cried out(Numbers 20:16 KJV) to God and prayed that He would send a "whale"(Matthew 12:40 KJV) to send our son where he is suppose to be(like Jonah)-with his 3 brothers(who he is mad at) and 2sisters so his daughter who turns 4 this weekend will know her cousins, etc. He was home educated then went to a Christian high school. -Luke 18:1-8 KJV(the widow woman). When led by the Lord I have prayed for years for things before. I need the "patience of Job"-James 5:11 KJV.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading this post so much. How very encouraging. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to reading The Winged Watchman.
Have a great day!
Roan
I have been lurking here for a while. But never commented. I loved the Winged Watchman. You have such a nice encouraging way. Lately I have been reading a lot of different books about women enduring deprivation. They are the ones that keep everyone going! I'm glad you got some new clothes. I'm sure it made your husband very happy too.
ReplyDeleteThis was such an encouragement to me. At times I feel like I'm just a housekeeper and baby sitter. It's easy to forget how important our job is. This book sounds really good. I need to try and find it.
ReplyDeleteWe also love The Winged Watchman. Have you read The Borrowed House?
ReplyDeleteYour practical application to our lives today is so good. =) I hate to shop clothes for myself too ~ since it's hard to find modest affordable clothes ...that will make me look 10 pounds lighter :-\ Glad you found a boost for your wardrobe!
The story also makes me think of the ten Booms. Corrie gets to tell the story, but Betsy showed her how to truly love their enemies. Amazing.
