This last year I was blessed with a pair of those high-efficiency washer and dryer units. We had been using the basic front-loading Frigidaire, marketed under several other brand names, for more than a decade, but I felt that perhaps we should upgrade to a bigger drum, higher capacity model (but they are so very expensive).So much for "efficiency"--though the machines work beautifully and wash and dry remarkably well, the new models have so many plastic parts that it has been down numerous times--all within the first year alone! Still I am very thankful and grateful to have them.
Take this last week. We had about five loads waiting when we realized the washer was flashing an error code. I just happened to know what this error code meant--the pump had debris wedged in it. And, the washing machine was locked up tight, so we couldn't retrieve the clothing it contained. Everything had to remain in the tub until the repair man came (fortunately, because it contained whites there was enough bleach in the cycle to keep the bacteria down).
After calling the repairman, (the one we pay for every month with an additional fee added to our utility bill--this is such a nifty program--I wish everyone could enjoy it as we do!), I was cheerfully informed by the lady on the other end of the phone that the repairman wouldn't come until Tuesday, and I was calling on Friday!
This would not be a problem for the "average"-sized family--with maybe four loads to do for the whole week, but there are still 11 of us at home! This means 3-4 loads each and every day!
Well, I was trusting God--He could handle this, and we would be just fine--buy paper towels, wear our clothing longer, reuse the bath towels, etc.
Then Tuesday came. We had stowed the frightening mound of wash in the garage (it was so cold that it crinkled when we moved it), but we were ready to tackle it all and get it done, even if it took us all day.

...we were still not discouraged. My dear husband told us we could load it all up and take it to the laundromat. So we did.
Ten washing machines, eight dryers, four hours, and more than $30 later, we had nine baskets full of clean (sort of) laundry that we brought home to be sorted, folded and put away (we actually only own three laundry baskets, so we gathered up the huge cardboard apple boxes they use to load up our click-and-pull orders at Sam's Club in order to have enough containers--the kids use these in the basement as huge, stacking blocks to play with).
That was two days ago. This morning the door bell rang and my 12yo daughter excitedly brought me the box with the needed part--it had only taken two days! Praise His wonderful name!
Then, when I called for the repairman to come back out and install the pump, I was not only informed that he would be coming the next day, but that we would not have to pay for next month's premium ($33) to make up for the extra cost of using the laundromat--Hallelujah!
This was not a major catastrophe--just a little annoyance. It is important to live a joyful, thankful life so that the "little foxes" don't destroy the vines and interrupt God's loving flow each and everyday. His blessing and provision shows His great interest in the mundane and insignificant issues of our daily lives--I'm sure you can all concur!















You are lucky to have gotten yours fixed so fast. My washing machine and dryer are separate machines but both have died in the last week. The dryer can be fixed by my very handy dh but the washing machine needs to be fixed under an insurance claim. Right now with all the flooding in Queensland, Australia, I have decided to hire a washing machine for a month ($95) instead of pay out $9 per load at the laundromat and have a cost of over $110 over the 2 weeks it would normally take for the insurance to be sorted. I am not relying on it though with this busy time for insurance companies.

Oh wow, we have a lot of laundry, but not that much : ) Such a great post, so glad everything worked out and that you kept a good attitude.
ReplyDeleteWe have a great washer made by Staber in Ohio. It is like a front in that it has a rotating drum but it top loads and takes a simple motor to run it - no computer, no needed repairman...my husband can do repairs and even replace the motor if necessary! We don't have as many children as you do, but we have 6 plus the two of us and a grandbaby living here.

Sherry wonderful reminder and post. Such a good testimony to the repair man in how you handled it and the extra bonus that they waved your fee for next month. Our Lord is faithful to us even with something like laundry:)

I love your attitude. But you know, what are ya gonna do?? That's always what my hubby says when things are off kilter. And with big families, that is all the time, and never very pretty!! We have 2 washers and one broke in the last month and we've not replaced it yet. Believe me, we are feeling it too. But, I'm thankful I still have one and the trip to the laundry mat hasn't haunted us!! Yet!!

ReplyDeleteI have been there and done that and I "only" have five children! When our washer broke, and the nearest laundromat was 30 minutes away, I had to get right with God in my attitude! :-)
So glad all is well again.
Days like this make me grateful for the seemingly "little things" I can so easily take for granted. (like machines to clean our clothes!) We had a few days last month where our dryer broke and my husband was out of town but the blessing was my sister who lives nearby and let me dry our things at her house until we could have the problem repaired. So many blessings and I really love how you mentioned God's love and caring flowing out over us, and not even the "little foxes" can take that away. Or something like that!

What model is your washer? My kenmore/whirlpool made front loader needs the pump cleaned out several times a year, as the kids do not check pockets when doing the wash for me. I have taken the pump apart several times, after the repair man showed me how. It's only taking out the 2 screws holding the front lower panel to remove it. You can then reach up behind the door lock and pull the release lever for the door. :)

ReplyDeleteI don't have as many children as you, but I remember several trips to the laudromat when we had a machine break down. It's always an adventure trying to get all the laudry done and keep the kids in line, especially when several of the dryers finish at one time. At least there were several sets of little hands to fold.

ReplyDeleteYou know what--I actually enjoyed my time in the peaceful, warm, clean-smelling laundromat near our home. I like that I can wash all my loads at the same time so that the whole thing is shorter, start to finish. God certainly can bless us in any situation!!

ReplyDeleteYou are inspiring, I must admit, I would not have such a cheerful attitude about it. We had a new dishwasher a few years back, that broke 4 times under the 1 year warranty, and died a few months later. I had been so excited to finally get a stainless one, with stainless inside.

But, I have to ask, could you share the brand name so we don't purchase the same brand?
