We were planning on going out yesterday to the library, among other places, but first we had to hunt down all the library books.
For the average family this is pretty simple, for our large, homeschooling brood this is a major event. We had checked out 70 books altogether--enough to fill a few large cardboard boxes. When you mix this colossal number with a 6-bedroom, 4-bathroom house, you have quite the treasure hunt!
It was that one item that caused it all.
Since the children were not being successful in their search, I started looking--under beds and in closets and behind desks...
...and I found more than I bargained for. Since we have been pretty busy the last month or so, I have not been paying as careful attention in my inspections, and it was quite evident! (Especially in the six, eight, and 10 yo's room) there was all sorts of clutter scattered behind and underneath everything--how did I miss so much? Everyday I looked in and saw that the beds were made and the floors cleaned and even took glances under the beds, but I had underestimated the tenacity with which children will find ways not to put things away--in the cracks and crevices of every room.
So...we gave up the idea of going out and "super-cleaned" instead.
I know all about the idea that you are only supposed to spend 15 minutes on an area, but I like to go "whole-hog" and dive in with both feet until completely finished.
We concentrated on the little girls' room and the kitchen, since today we are going to do major grocery shopping.
It took us hours.
I had the middle children tackle the bedroom, and my 17yo daughter and I worked in the kitchen. We rearranged the pantry and cupboards for a more logical work flow (life changes all the time, and so does the work-flow of the kitchen), and scoured all surfaces as we went. It turned out to be a precious time as we put Nancy Campbell's teaching CD's on Beautiful Womanhood in the player while we worked. We hugged a lot and discussed several of the interesting ideas we were listening to as we continued with our tasks.
The middle children learned how to get along--the 12yo daughter learning how to honor the leadership of her 14yo brother, and the brother learning how to guide and lead with love and cheerfulness. My 16yo son had a special time of bonding with the baby as he showed her a good time while we cleaned--afterwards she was still asking for him, and he was beaming with pride and accomplishment.
It was a very satisfying day...
...but we are still searching for number 70...

We check out about 30-40 books at a time when we go to the library. They look at us like we are crazy! LOL We love to read! Check your vehicles for the last book. That is usually where we find our lost ones. They get stuck right up under the seat or down beside the wall. Good luck finding it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet time! Sometimes just "doing life" together is more educational then any day spent with noses in notebooks =)
ReplyDeleteHow funny. Hope you find the book.
ReplyDeleteIt does feel so satisfying to get that kind of cleaning done though. We did that the other day. I had to figure out if Lydia truly needed warm clothes as she reported. Turns out she had nothing! Next will be figuring out the winter needs. I am so not up to that! God bless, Sherry
That is how we got to this week! Deep cleaning here too. I have all my library books at this moment - but my husband jokes that we rent them vs check them out. I maintain if you factor in the sheer volume we borrow my loss percentage is darned low. ; )
ReplyDeleteHave you checked your bookshelves? We have so many ex-library books from sales that sometimes our real library bks end up on our shelves. I also ended up paying for a book we had searched high and low for only to find it many months later in one of many canvas bags someone had used while running errands.
It's an epidemic! We have the same issue w/ the near-same aged boys...I'd personally love to hear how you overcame feeling betrayed and deceived to deal with it in godliness...I'd love to hear how you taught the lessons you mentioned....
ReplyDeleteI detest inspecting. I need to do it. What is realistic? Am I really asking too much for their ages? When do I get to praise and be the nuturer instead of patrolman?
next week is appts and cleaning projects...and I want to make it a joy instead of a burden
Well, I think the floor is almost clean so we can go take a walk on the trail....

Joy--thanks for the tip--we finally figured it must have been turned in with some DVD's, since it was a CD in a DVD case. We're going to ask the library to do a search for it just in case.
ReplyDeleteI agree that life is all too often educational...
Pam, we are on the verge of changing to winter, but it's been unseasonably warm here, so we still have our winter stuff in storage--but that should change soon!
Kim--we have lots of those satchels laying around (we've been keeping one for each child's school books)--and I think I've searched each one--my husband chuckled at what your husband said!
Anon--I will try and answer your questions in a post.
Our hunt this week was a pair of ballet slippers...found behind all the neatly positioned books. My 5 year old remembered she had put it on some shelf but couldn't remember which one :) This prompted the thorough cleaning of all shelves, which now look wonderful and we read some new finds on our own library shelves.
ReplyDeleteHa--that's us too! Robyn is more laid back about library books and late charges than I am. I kid around with her and tell her my library record is so checkered from overdue books the children have checked on my card -- I will likely never get another bank loan!
ReplyDeleteRobyn tells me banks don't check library records, but I am not so sure. It's a good thing the police don't, though, o/w I'd be a library felon!
I know the feeling of not being able to find that ONE book! But it sounds like a blessing in disguise. The Lord blessed your day together, gave you a couple of really clean rooms, and some beautiful family time. I love when days come together like that!!
ReplyDeleteBeen there ... done that ... doing that. And what's worse, have even bagged the "outing" to deep clean.
ReplyDeleteStarted school 3w ago ... looking around ... realizing things here have fallen behind or have gotten overlooked while we're getting "in the groove" of a new school year.
Need to schedule a deep cleaning ... soon.
Nice to know it's not JUST me ... toting multiple boxes of library books ... scrambling to find the last one ... and finding all manner of "other" things in the process. Thanks.
Tammy
OH! I'm soooooo glad Im NOT the only one who has cleaning overhauls over a library book! That happend to us just this monday! I'm still hoping we got them all!!
ReplyDeleteWe just had a day like that last week. I went into the 6 and 8 year olds bedroom and found many hidden treasures. we decluttered their room and now we are just doing one room at a time.
ReplyDeleteWhen my kids are missing books, I almost always find them wedged in between my son's bed and the wall, up near his pillow. He reads and then puts them there "for safekeeping" when he goes to sleep. If they're not there, they're usually behind the sofa. ^_^
